There is a credible, non-hand-wavy way to use the term, and it doesn't come from a pitch deck. It comes from Andrej Karpathy — former Tesla AI director and a founding member of OpenAI — who argues that a more complete picture is emerging of large language models "not as a chatbot, but the kernel process of a new Operating System." In his mapping, the LLM is the CPU, the context window is RAM, and the tools the model can call are the peripherals and drivers.
This is a useful frame because it sets a real bar. A kernel doesn't suggest things. It runs them. It schedules work, talks to the drivers, makes the hardware do what the program asked. If you want to borrow the word "operating system," that's the standard: the AI has to be the thing in the middle that actually moves the resources around — not a smarter help menu bolted onto the side.
